Excellent Science Fiction

I found a nice 1951 book club edition of The Day Of The Triffids…

(null)
Unbelievably I got it for free out side of the Greenville SC 2nd And Charles. They keep free bins outside, and sometimes have some great reading copies of good books. I thought this copy of The Day Of The Triffids was in pretty good shape! The old movie version is pretty crazy as well. Check ’em out if you get a chance.

Great shows ‘n comic shops ‘n robots!!

I was in Athens Georgia recently for FLUKE mini-comics and zine festival. It’s such a fun show, and afterward everyone hits the local comic shop Bizarro Wuxtry!! Such a wonderful place! With super hard to find items. These are not for sale and have decorated the place for years…

(null)
I’m guessing here, but they seem like they might be old carnival prizes?

(null)
The place is filled every inch with robots, monsters, superheroes, weirdos, comics, comix, zines, pop culture ephemera, vintage books and Halloween decorations!
I picked up a couple of robots. A Great Mazinga (or Mazinger Z for my Japanese friends!) and a sort of nondescript Shogun/Voltron style robot.

(null)
He’s definitely a knockoff, but still very high quality despite the cheaper decals and paint job.

The fists fire off, and he has a removable rocket wing pack, and a couple of swords…

(null)

(null)the other robot, simply called “Godbot”, is a bit cheaper in construction, it’s package says diecast metal, but there is very little metal used.

(null)
This robot also has a sword and some other propeller style blade…

Fists that fire…

……and just generally neato!

A really fun trip to a terrific show (FLUKE) and a fantastic comic shop…Bizarro Wuxtry!! Mazinga and I will try our darnedest to make it back next year! Right Mazinga?

Hot Fries! A post about junk food…

In 1971 Goodmark Foods Inc. created the popular “Hot Fries” snack food. They licensed the comic strip character Andy Capp created by Reg Smythe (1917-1998).

(null)
The year Reg Smythe died (1998) Goodmark Foods was acquired by ConAgra Foods that make and distribute the “Fries” to this day.

(null)
I’ve often wondered about how and why Andy Capp was representing this particular snack food? Do they help him with his hangovers?! At any rate, having Andy Capp sure makes this product a bit more interesting! Not to mention a very special style of “bad for you” GOOD!

TROGs

I’ve made a small series of hand built ceramic mugs. To finish them off, I’ve painted them with underglaze. Here’s an example of one in the bisque fire stage…

(null)
And here are some photos of the completed piece, after the final firing, note the color change…

I like the little Troglodyte guy, I’m thinking of calling him (them?) Trog (Trogs?). Thanks! Later skaters!

Minecraft knock-off?

Found this little guy and thought “oh man what a rip on Minecraft”, but then I looked closer and realized “this is a pixelated goblin businessman”! I could not pass him up.

(null)
A bit more research revealed its from a video game called Terraria. It is a multi platform “side scroller”. Not much like Minecraft at all, except the toys are very similar. Here are some pics of the guy open and out of package……
